Twice a year is the gold standard — a pre-winter and pre-summer visit, because the machine works both shifts. Once a year is the floor. No other residential HVAC equipment earns its maintenance schedule the way a heat pump does, and the lifespan data shows it.
Some increase is normal — heat pumps work harder in cold weather. A dramatic spike usually means auxiliary electric heat is running far more than it should, either because the heat pump has a problem it is compensating for, or because the aux lockout settings were never configured right. Both are fixable, and both are worth fixing quickly at winter electric rates.
The reversing valve is the prime suspect — it is the component that redirects refrigerant flow between modes, and its solenoid or the valve body itself can fail. The cheaper alternative is a control or thermostat fault giving the wrong orders. Testing separates them quickly, and both are repairs we handle routinely.
First check the reassuring explanation: heat pump supply air runs near body temperature — warm to the room, cool to a hand expecting furnace blast — while heating perfectly well. The real-problem version is a house losing ground on the thermostat: low charge, reversing valve, or mode fault, all diagnosable, all better caught before aux heat quietly takes over the bill.
It is the setting that runs backup heat alone, bypassing the heat pump. Use it when the heat pump has clearly failed — iced solid, making bad noises, tripping breakers — to stay warm until service.
