Usually the reversing valve or its solenoid — the component that flips the refrigerant direction and makes a heat pump a heat pump. Sometimes it is a control or thermostat issue instead, which is cheaper. Diagnosis tells us which; both are routine repairs for us.
First, the reassurance: heat pump supply air is naturally milder than furnace air — around body temperature — so it can feel cool even when it is heating fine. Genuinely cool air, though, points to low refrigerant, a failed reversing valve, or the system running in the wrong mode. If the house is losing ground against the thermostat, it is a real problem and worth a call.
It is the setting that runs backup heat alone, bypassing the heat pump. Use it when the heat pump has clearly failed — iced solid, making bad noises, tripping breakers — to stay warm until service. It is expensive to run, so it is a bridge to a repair, not a lifestyle.
Age and repair size decide it, same as any equipment — with the note that heat pumps age faster than ACs because they run year-round. Light frost that clears during defrost cycles is completely normal. A unit encased in thick ice that never clears is not — that means a defrost fault, low charge, or an airflow problem, and running it that way strains the compressor.
