What size furnace or AC do I need for my house?

The right size comes from a load calculation based on your home's square footage, insulation, window area, and layout — not just square footage alone, and never just matching the old unit's number. An oversized or undersized system both cause real problems.

Square footage is one input among several, not the whole answer. Insulation quality, window count and orientation, ceiling height, and how open or compartmentalized the floor plan is all change how much heating or cooling capacity a home actually needs. Two houses of identical square footage can need meaningfully different equipment sizes.

Getting it wrong in either direction causes real problems: an oversized system short-cycles, wears out faster, and doesn't dehumidify well in cooling mode; an undersized one runs constantly and never quite keeps up on the hottest or coldest days. A proper load calculation — not a guess off the old unit's tonnage — is the only way to get it right, and it's a standard part of every installation quote we provide.
