Heat pumps run year-round, and in Hoffman Estates that means year-round chances for something to quit — in a January cold snap or a July heat wave alike.
We are a local Fox Valley crew — Hoffman Estates is about 44 minutes from our North Aurora shop from our shop — and heat pumps get the same measured diagnostics as everything else we touch: readings first, conclusions second.
Heat pump diagnostics cover territory furnaces and ACs never see: reversing valves, defrost boards and sensors, auxiliary heat staging, and refrigerant behavior in both directions.

Our Hoffman Estates heat pump calls usually start with one of the following:
Every heat pump repair we run follows the same sequence:
We test the system the way a heat pump actually works — heating, cooling, and defrost — with pressures, temperatures, and electrical readings in each. Reversing valves, defrost sensors, and auxiliary staging get checked specifically, because those are the failures generic AC diagnostics walk right past.
You see what failed, what likely caused it, and what the fix costs — before any work starts. If the system's age makes a major repair questionable, you get the repair-versus-replace math honestly, with the decision left where it belongs: with you. We hold that line on every job in Cook County.
The fix goes in right — correct parts, correct refrigerant handling, correct control configuration — and then the system proves itself through full cycles in both modes while we verify capacity and operation. It is the same standard we bring to every Hoffman Estates visit.
Heat pump components rarely die alone; something usually worked them to death. Before we leave, we check airflow, coil condition, charge, and the auxiliary heat settings, so the repair lasts instead of repeating.
Hoffman Estates winters are where marginal heat pumps get exposed: defrost problems, low charge, and bad aux-heat settings all hide in mild weather and surface in the first real cold. We diagnose with that pattern in mind.
The habits that turn small faults into big bills:
Repair pricing for Hoffman Estates heat pumps:
What you never pay us for: the same failure twice. Heat pump components usually die of a cause — starved airflow, drifted charge, misconfigured staging — and our repairs include finding it. A capacitor swap that ignores why the capacitor cooked is half a repair at full price, and we do not sell halves. We are about 44 minutes from our North Aurora shop, and the estimate is always free of surprises.

Good to know
Frost is part of the deal; ice is not. A working unit frosts lightly and clears itself on defrost cycles, steam cloud and all. A unit buried in solid ice that defrost never touches has a real problem — failed defrost control, low charge, or blocked airflow — and every hour it runs that way is hard on the compressor. Emergency heat on, service call in.
Yes — the major brands and the common failure parts (dual-run capacitors, contactors, defrost controls, fan motors) are familiar territory, and the truck is stocked for them. Who installed it does not matter to us; its condition does.
Ideally twice a year — once before heating season, once before cooling — because it works both. Annual service is the practical minimum. Year-round duty means maintenance matters more for heat pumps than for any other residential HVAC equipment.
Some increase is normal — heat pumps work harder in cold weather. A dramatic spike usually means auxiliary electric heat is running far more than it should, either because the heat pump has a problem it is compensating for, or because the aux lockout settings were never configured right. Both are fixable, and both are worth fixing quickly at winter electric rates.
The reversing valve is the prime suspect — it is the component that redirects refrigerant flow between modes, and its solenoid or the valve body itself can fail. The cheaper alternative is a control or thermostat fault giving the wrong orders. Testing separates them quickly, and both are repairs we handle routinely.
First check the reassuring explanation: heat pump supply air runs near body temperature — warm to the room, cool to a hand expecting furnace blast — while heating perfectly well. The real-problem version is a house losing ground on the thermostat: low charge, reversing valve, or mode fault, all diagnosable, all better caught before aux heat quietly takes over the bill. Either way, you will get a straight answer from us.
It is the setting that runs backup heat alone, bypassing the heat pump. Use it when the heat pump has clearly failed — iced solid, making bad noises, tripping breakers — to stay warm until service. It is expensive to run, so it is a bridge to a repair, not a lifestyle. That has held true on every Hoffman Estates job we have run.
