A furnace that starts, runs a few minutes, and shuts back down is short cycling — and it's one of the most common winter calls we take across the Fox Valley. It always has a cause, and most of the causes get more expensive the longer they run.
A healthy furnace cycle runs long enough to bring the house up to temperature and shut off satisfied — typically ten to fifteen minutes or more depending on the weather. Short cycling means the burner lights, runs one to five minutes, and cuts out before the thermostat is anywhere near satisfied, then repeats the loop over and over.
Every one of those aborted cycles puts ignition wear on the igniter, thermal stress on the heat exchanger, and start-up load on the blower — while delivering almost no heat. It's the mechanical equivalent of driving a car in stop-and-go traffic all day.
The flame sensor is a thin metal rod that proves to the control board that the burners actually lit. When it gets coated in combustion residue — which happens naturally over a season or two — it can't sense the flame reliably, so the board shuts the gas off a few seconds after ignition as a safety measure.
The classic signature: the furnace lights, you hear the burners for a few seconds, then everything stops and it tries again. Three failed tries usually locks the furnace out entirely. Cleaning the sensor is a small job, and it's part of every fall tune-up we do — which is why maintained furnaces almost never make this call.
A furnace has a high-limit switch that shuts the burners down if the cabinet gets too hot. A collapsed or filthy filter, blocked return grilles, or closed supply registers all choke airflow — heat builds up inside the furnace, the limit trips, the burners stop, things cool, and the cycle repeats.
This one is genuinely dangerous over time: repeated overheating is a leading cause of cracked heat exchangers. If your furnace short cycles and the filter looks like a doormat, you've likely found the problem — but the furnace should still be checked, because the exchanger endured every one of those overheats.
A furnace with too much capacity for the house blasts the thermostat's immediate area to temperature in minutes and shuts down before heat ever reaches the far rooms. The result is short cycles, uneven rooms, and a system aging in fast-forward. We see this in homes where equipment was swapped over the years by matching the old label instead of measuring the house.
There's no repair for oversizing — but if this is your situation, it's worth knowing before your next replacement, because the fix is simply sizing the next furnace correctly.
A thermostat mounted above a supply register, in direct sun, or near a heat source reads its little microclimate instead of the house. Failing batteries and loose wiring cause erratic calls for heat too. It's the cheapest fix on this list, which is why good diagnosis rules it out first.
Check the easy things: fresh filter, all registers open, thermostat set correctly with good batteries. If the cycling continues, stop resetting it and have it diagnosed — the failure modes above are cheap to fix early and expensive to ignore, and one of them stresses the one component (the heat exchanger) whose failure ends the furnace's life.
