New Heat Pump Owner? What's Normal in Winter (and What Isn't)

Heat pumps run differently than the furnaces most Illinois homeowners grew up with — and nobody warns you, so perfectly healthy systems generate panicked January phone calls. Here's the owner's guide to a heat pump's first winter: the normal, the not-normal, and the settings that protect your electric bill.

Normal thing #1: milder air from the vents

A furnace blasts 120–140 degree air in short bursts. A heat pump delivers 90–105 degree air in longer, steadier cycles — warmer than the room, but cooler than your hand expects, so it can feel 'cool' while heating the house perfectly well. The test isn't how the vent feels; it's whether the house holds its setpoint. If it does, your system is fine. If the thermostat is losing ground, that's real — see below.

Normal thing #2: the steam cloud and the whoosh

In cold, damp weather the outdoor coil frosts up — by design, that's how it harvests heat. Periodically the unit reverses for a few minutes to melt the frost: you'll hear a whooshing or swooshing sound, the outdoor fan may stop, and a dramatic cloud of steam rolls off the unit. First-time owners regularly mistake this for smoke. It's a defrost cycle, it's routine, and it ends on its own.

The not-normal version: a unit encased in thick ice that defrost never clears. That's a defrost fault, low charge, or airflow problem — switch to emergency heat and call for service.

Normal thing #3: longer run times

Heat pumps are designed to run long, gentle cycles — especially variable-speed models, which may hum along at low output for hours in cold weather. Owners trained on furnace short-bursts assume something's stuck on. It isn't: long low-speed runs are the efficient behavior, and they also keep temperatures steadier than furnace cycling ever did.

Know your backup heat — it's where the money hides

Below a certain outdoor temperature, your system supplements with backup heat: electric elements in all-electric setups, or the gas furnace in dual-fuel homes. Two settings matter enormously. 'Auxiliary' engages automatically as designed. 'Emergency heat' runs backup alone — it's for actual heat pump failures, not cold days, and running electric emergency heat as a habit will produce an electric bill you'll remember.

The silent version of that bill: misconfigured thermostats that call auxiliary heat constantly while the heat pump idles. If your first winter's electric bills look wrong, don't shrug — have the staging and lockout settings checked. It's one of the most common (and most fixable) problems we find on heat pumps we didn't install.

The short winter checklist

  • Keep the outdoor unit clear: brush heavy snow off, keep drifts away, never chip ice with tools
  • Maintain a couple feet of clearance — and make sure roof meltwater doesn't drip onto the unit and refreeze
  • Set it and leave it: heat pumps prefer steady setpoints over big daily setbacks (big swings summon auxiliary heat)
  • Change filters on schedule — starved airflow hurts heat pumps in both seasons
  • Book service annually, ideally twice a year — this machine works both shifts
