The heat pumps that earned Illinois skepticism were single-speed units engineered for the Sun Belt: fine at 40 degrees, gasping at 20, useless at zero. The generation installed today is different machinery. For homes that already have gas service, this is often the design we recommend: it captures most of the heat pump's efficiency without asking electric resistance heat to carry January, and it means a polar vortex is a non-event. Your existing furnace can sometimes serve as the backup half, which improves the economics further.
Operating savings depend entirely on what you're replacing. Coming off propane or electric baseboard, heat pump savings are usually dramatic — these are the households that call us thrilled.
