Sticky House? How Your AC Manages Humidity — and Why Some Can't

That 78-degree-but-sticky feeling, fogged windows, damp basements, a house that feels gross at temperatures that should be fine — Illinois summer comfort is mostly a moisture story. Here's how your AC handles humidity, and why some systems fail at it.

Your AC is a dehumidifier — when it runs long enough

Every air conditioner dehumidifies as a side effect: humid air passes over the cold indoor coil, moisture condenses out (that's what the condensate drain carries away), and the air returns drier as well as cooler. On a proper cycle, an AC wrings gallons of water out of your house per day.

The catch: meaningful moisture removal takes sustained run time. The coil needs to get cold and stay cold while air moves across it for a while. Short cycles cool the air a bit and quit before real dehumidification happens — which is the root of most chronically sticky houses.

The oversizing trap

Here's the counterintuitive one: an air conditioner that's too big makes a house less comfortable. An oversized unit blasts the thermostat to temperature in a few minutes and shuts off — over and over — never running long enough to dry the air. The house reads 74 and feels like a locker room, and the owner responds by setting it to 70, paying more to feel worse.

Maintenance problems that ruin dehumidification

  • Dirty evaporator coil — an insulating grime layer keeps the coil from getting cold enough to condense moisture properly
  • Low refrigerant charge — same result, plus the risk of coil icing
  • Choked filter or weak airflow — poor air contact with the coil means poor moisture removal
  • Clogged condensate drain — the water the AC removed has nowhere to go, and can end up back in your air or on your floor

The basement question

Fox Valley basements run damp in summer for their own reasons: below-grade walls stay cool, cool surfaces meet humid air, and condensation follows. Central AC helps the basement less than the rest of the house because cool basements rarely trigger the thermostat. If your basement smells musty by August, a dedicated dehumidifier down there is often the honest answer alongside — not instead of — a properly running AC upstairs.

If your house is chronically sticky

Work the list in order: get the system serviced (coil, charge, airflow, drain — cheap and frequently the whole answer), then have run times evaluated for oversizing.
