The air quality industry sells a lot of glowing boxes with vague promises. We install this equipment for a living — and clean the ductwork it lives in — so here's the version of the buyer's guide with the hype stripped out.
Your furnace and AC circulate the entire volume of your home's air several times every hour. That makes the HVAC system the most powerful air-cleaning platform you own — the only question is what's installed in the airstream. For most homes, the answer is a 1-inch filter whose actual job is protecting the blower from large debris, not cleaning your air.
That's the honest starting point: before any glowing gadget enters the conversation, the highest-value upgrade in whole-home air quality is replacing that dust screen with filtration that actually captures fine particles.
A media cabinet replaces the 1-inch slot with a 4–5 inch deep pleated filter holding dramatically more filtration surface. It captures far finer particles — pollen, pet dander, fine dust — and, counterintuitively, all that surface area makes it easier for the blower to breathe through than a restrictive high-MERV 1-inch filter. It also lasts months instead of weeks, so the filter budget roughly washes out while the filtration quality doesn't compare.
The one engineering caveat: the cabinet must match your system's airflow tolerance, which is why our installs end by measuring static pressure rather than assuming. A filter the blower can't breathe through creates a new problem while solving the old one.
Through a humid Illinois summer, your indoor coil stays damp for months, and damp surfaces in dark moving air grow mold and biofilm. That's the source of many musty-AC smells and a genuine air quality problem. A UV germicidal lamp mounted at the coil keeps that surface biologically clean at the source — real technology doing a real job.
What UV is not: an air filter. It removes zero dust, dander, or pollen from the airstream. Sold as coil protection, it delivers; sold as a filtration replacement, it's being missold. We install it for what it does and pair it with media filtration for what that does.
We don't sell ionizers, plasma gadgets, or plug-in 'purifier' boxes, and that's deliberate: much of the category lacks credible evidence at residential scale, and some devices generate ozone — a lung irritant, which is a strange thing to plug in on purpose. When the evidence changes, our lineup can change; until then, a recommendation you can trust requires being willing to not sell things.
One more honest sequence note: new filtration can't un-dirty your ductwork. If years of construction dust, pet hair, and fine grit are sitting in the runs, the system keeps re-entraining that reservoir no matter how good the new filter is. Sometimes the right first step is a duct cleaning to remove the backlog — then the media cabinet defends the clean state. A camera inspection settles which situation you have, and if your ducts are already fine, we'll tell you that too.
